Welcome to the WePOWER Network website!

WePOWER is a vibrant voluntary women’s professional network in Energy and Power Sector in South Asia that supports women's participation in energy projects and institutions and promotes normative change regarding women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

WePOWER is in its fifth year!

February 2023 marks four years since WePOWER was officially launched. Thanks in part to the diligent commitment of our Partners, we are proud to report that WePOWER continues to be a leading champion of promoting gender diversity and women’s empowerment in the energy sector. Since its launch, our Partners have completed over 5,763 gender activities that benefitted over 136,644 women and girls. See results here.

WePOWER Progress Report 2023

We are pleased to share the incredible results of the work of a growing number of WePOWER Partners in the WePOWER Progress Report. In 2023, WePOWER Partners completed 3,064 activities reaching 67,852 girls and women. From 2019-2023, WePOWER Partners implemented 5,763 activities in South Asia, reaching more than 136,644 female beneficiaries including students, interns, young professionals, engineers and returning mothers in South Asia. We look forward to another excellent year to achieve our mission of more and better jobs for women.


NEW PARTNERS

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is India’s largest power utility. Established in 1975, NTPC is steering ahead to be India’s largest integrated power company and targets to become a 130 GW firm by 2032. NTPC is currently contributing to 25% of total country’s generation. As a WePOWER partner, NTPC is committed to developing STEM Labs in schools in project vicinities and conducting outreach programs in nearby colleges to interact with girl children about the work in Energy Sector.

University of Ruhuna (UoR) is the sixth oldest university in Sri Lanka, established by a Special Presidential Decree in 1978 and granted full university status in 1984. UoR has achieved notable success in academics, research, and community engagement, positioning itself as a leading institution in Sri Lanka. As a WePOWER partner, UoR will conduct job readiness workshops, connect female undergraduate students with female engineering professionals through mentorship and conduct capacity building leadership trainings for students.

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) located in Colombo has been established in the1959 at Gangodawila. With eleven (11) faculties, the University is home to over 12,000 Undergraduates, and over 1000 postgraduate students. It is considered the largest University in terms of student population in Sri Lanka. The USJ is also in the forefront of research and innovation with a research council of over 20 research centres and an Invention, Innovation and Venture Creation Council with over 50 Entrepreneurs and stakeholders with over 15 patents. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, of USJ has been established in 2016 is offering students to use their academic knowledge and skills in practice through industry collaborations and projects and has established several MoUs with national and international academic and industrial partners.


MoU between IEEE WIE and WePOWER

An MoU was signed between WePOWER and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Women in Engineering (IEEE WIE). This agreement underscores IEEE WIE’s strong commitment to WePOWER. IEEE WIE is a crucial partner in reaching academic institutions, female engineering students, and professionals as our network continues to grow. 

The National Chapters of WePOWER

The National Chapters of WePOWER are key to institutionalizing the network at the national level, fostering exchange of ideas, facilitating lateral learning, opening communications, and encouraging collaborative partnerships among national, institutional and strategic partners.  We will be implementing the National Chapters in several South Asia countries in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), following the Agreement.
